Un morceau d'histoire des îles Åland
La forteresse de Bomarsund était autrefois le bâtiment le plus magnifique des îles Åland.
La construction de ce gigantesque fort a été entamée par les forces armées russes en 1832, mais après plus de vingt ans, il n'était qu'à moitié achevé. La forteresse principale devait être une caserne blindée de 290 mètres de long, semi-circulaire, à deux étages, conçue pour abriter 2 500 hommes. Six tourelles d'artillerie étaient prévues autour de la forteresse principale. Pendant la guerre de Crimée, en 1854, la forteresse a été détruite.
