Guldsmed Maria Karlström, formgivaren bakom smyckena som bars på självständighetsbalen 2025

When the First Lady wore Åland – Guldviva at the Independence Day ball

When Finland celebrated its independence on 6 December 2025, Åland was represented in the small details too. Suzanne Innes-Stubb wore bespoke jewellery created by Guldviva's goldsmith and designer Maria Karlström.

The Independence Day ball at the Presidential Palace is one of the most watched occasions of the year in Finland. Clothes, jewellery and craftsmanship often say something about the person wearing them – and about the country being celebrated. It therefore felt especially honouring that Ålandic goldsmith work took its place that evening.

Jewellery created for the occasion

The jewellery was designed especially for Suzanne Innes-Stubb and drew its expression from Guldviva's world around Stormskärs Maja. In the form, the nature of the Åland archipelago meets a strong story of endurance and a modern Nordic design language.

The work was carried out in recycled gold. The pieces combined 18-carat recycled white and red gold, with details in 23-carat recycled gold. The choice of materials is close to how Guldviva works: precious materials, local stories and craftsmanship made to last.

Åland craftsmanship in a national context

For Maria Karlström, the commission was both a mark of trust and an opportunity to let Åland be seen in a quiet yet distinct way. A piece of jewellery does not need to be large to carry a great story. In every surface, line and setting there are many hours of work – and the experience of a whole working life as a goldsmith.

Maria and Fredrik Lundberg were themselves guests at the independence celebrations. The evening thus became a double memory: taking part in the occasion, and seeing Ålandic craftsmanship worn in the Presidential Palace.

A story that continues

Since the beginning, Guldviva has drawn inspiration from Åland's nature, history and people. That Maria was asked to create jewellery for such an occasion feels like a continuation of the same idea: the local can travel far without losing its roots.

We are proud and grateful for the trust – and glad that a piece of the Åland archipelago accompanied the evening at the Independence Day ball.
