Guldviva's founder, goldsmith and designer Maria Karlström has been named Goldsmith of the Year 2025 in Finland. The award comes after 36 years in the profession – and Maria is the 36th recipient of the prize.
For Maria, the award is one of the greatest recognitions one can receive from one's own trade. It honours not just a single piece of jewellery, but a long career in which craftsmanship, design and entrepreneurship have developed side by side.
A working life at the bench
A goldsmith's work often begins long before the metal meets the tools. First there is an idea, a story or a feeling that needs to take shape. Then come sketches, material choices and patient work by hand. Every detail must work both aesthetically and practically – a piece of jewellery should be worn, loved and live on.
Over 36 years, Maria has built a design language closely tied to Åland. The plants of the archipelago, the movements of the sea, the history of the islands and people's stories recur throughout the collections. The result is jewellery that feels distinctly Ålandic, yet speaks to people far beyond the islands.
Guldviva – from workshop to well-known brand
Maria founded Guldviva with a strong belief in local craftsmanship. The company has grown, but the jewellery is still created with the same respect for the material and for the story each form is meant to carry.
Over the years, Maria has also shown how traditional goldsmithing can meet new ideas. She has created everything from personal commissions to acclaimed collections and artistic works. What they share is curiosity – and a will to keep the craft evolving.
A prize shared with many
Although the award bears Maria's name, a long working life is never a solitary journey. Customers, colleagues, partners, family and everyone who has worn Guldviva's jewellery have been part of the story.
We would therefore like to say a warm thank you to everyone who has followed us over the years. Goldsmith of the Year 2025 is a great honour for Maria and for all of Guldviva – and a recognition of the strength of Ålandic craftsmanship.
