Åland has a strong maritime tradition. Gustaf Erikson from Åland was the last great sailing ship owner in the world. In 1935 Gustaf Erikson's fleet consisted of 15 steel sailing ships, 8 North Sea sailing ships and 6 motor sailing ships.
