A beautiful silver dragonfly.
For us it is most associated with lazy summer days on an air mattress as they buzz around in the reeds, or as a colourful feature in late-summer gardens by the water. In any case, it is a common sight in our inner archipelago.
There are several different explanations for where the name TROLLSLÄNDA (Dragonfly) comes from. According to the Swedish Trollsländeföreningen, the most likely is that -slända comes from the spindle tool used when spinning ARN. Its shape is quite similar to a dragonfly’s body.
“Troll” in the name goes far back; the first Swedish written source may be from the 1600s. Dragonflies are then associated with trollpackor (witches). They were thus the witches’ animals; dragonflies.
