Silver oxidizes, meaning it becomes discoloured, when it comes into contact with sulphur. Sulphur is present in the air, on the skin, in cigarette smoke, perfumes, etc. In other words, it cannot be avoided. The more humid the air is, the faster silver oxidizes.
Tips to prolong the shine
- Store your silver jewellery in an airtight plastic bag (for example a minigrip bag).
- Avoid storing them in the bathroom, where it is often humid.
- Always take off your jewellery before showering, bathing or exercising.
- Use a suitable polishing cloth or a gentle silver and gold polish intended for home use.
- Avoid chemical cleaning agents on pearls – strong silver polish can damage the surface. (If you need to dip the entire piece, leave it in for only a few seconds.)
- Chemical cleaning also removes the oxidation that may be part of the design – so be especially careful when cleaning antiqued jewellery.
