The birch is Finland’s national tree
In 1988 the silver birch was chosen as Finland’s national tree. The silver birch is recognised by its long, hanging twigs and is often also called the weeping birch.
Throughout the ages the birch has been an important useful plant in the Nordic countries. Sap, bark, birch tar and potash. Whisks of tender early-summer birch in the sauna and leafy poles for midsummer. The birch is part of our history and thrives throughout our nature – from the downy birch in the shore groves of the archipelago to the small creeping dwarf birches on the bare fells.
