On Åland there is a strong maritime tradition. Gustaf Erikson from Åland was the last great sailing ship shipowner in the world. In 1935, Gustaf Erikson’s fleet consisted of 15 steel square-riggers, 8 North Sea sailing ships, and 6 motor-sailing vessels.
