At Guldviva we are mainly inspired by our Åland surroundings. Sometimes it is the nature around us that sparks our creativity, and sometimes it is also our Åland history that drives our creativity forward.
BOMARSUND is a major part of Åland’s history. After the Finnish War, which ended in 1809, both Finland and Åland became part of the Russian great power, and Russia saw the location of the Åland islands as an ideal outpost for future military purposes. Russia planned an astounding construction project for its fortification on Åland – the BOMARSUND fortress, with enormous ambitions of defence, stronghold and military reinforcement. A construction that, however, was never fully completed.
In 1854 the fierce battle broke out between Russia and France/Great Britain, where the half-finished fortress in BOMARSUND collapsed after just a few days as a result of the fighting in the Baltic Sea. The consequences of this turbulent wartime were that Åland was demilitarised in 1856.
We can still view the ruins of BOMARSUND, sunk into the ground in the fortress’s home municipality of Sund, located on Åland’s eastern side. Massive stone blocks in the middle of our nature, which make it almost strange to think that these once together formed a continuous, extensive settlement, constructed with the ambition of great military success.
This event was the foundation when we created our ring BOMARSUND. We created a fortress in silver and gold that reflected this essential past which still defines our Åland today.
