A piece of Åland history
Bomarsund Fortress was once Åland's most magnificent structure.
Construction of the gigantic fortress was begun by the Russian military in 1832 but after just over twenty years it was only half finished. The main fortress was to become a 290-metre-long semicircular armed barracks in two storeys, intended to house 2,500 men. Around the main fort six cannon towers were planned. During the Crimean War, in 1854, the fortress was destroyed.
The Bomarsund fortress was of great importance to Åland society and even today people talk about the “Bomarsund era”. Read more about the Bomarsund fortress and its history here.
BOMARSUND is inspired by the fortress’s hexagonal stones in red granite. BOMARSUND can advantageously be combined with a plain ring to highlight the design language.
BOMARSUND is antique finished.
